Who is your icon? That was the first question Eric Gauthier shot at the choreographers on his wish list for the new production. And it was an opening line that proved utterly persuasive. For they all wanted to be in on it … But where did the concept for this evening come from? Quite simply, Gauthier thought of his own icon – Sergei Diaghilev, the pioneer of modern dance. He took his cue from the great impresario of the Ballets Russes who had an unerring instinct for talent. For Eric Gauthier has long been convinced that one must put one’s faith in the right people.

ICON/ICONS brings together seven stage works and a film to create an evening of dance centring on inspiration. Created by eight international dance stars and dedicated to the artists who have held special significance in their careers. The diversity of the choreographic styles is perfectly suited to the festive occasion – the opening of the 6th COLOURS International Dance Festival. Yet this original programme achieves far more than simply showcasing the colours of dance. It allows the eight pacemakers to engage with their own artistic identities and their role models. The result is an encounter of equals, from icon to icon, so to speak. Above all, however, these are projects born of deep passion – unacademic, fresh and simply surprising. For – and this was important to Eric Gauthier – they should be real personal heroes, not only on the strength of their art, but on the strength of their lives. The spectrum of those selected is correspondingly broad, ranging from martial arts legend Bruce Lee to the Baroque innovator of ballet Jean-Georges Noverre, from Josephine Baker to Björk. Yet as diverse as they are – it is striking how deeply the choreographers draw upon history and cultural heritage for their ICON/ICONS world premieres. What’s more, the eight artists themselves span several generations. And so this evening demonstrates in many different ways: art is connection. In this respect, too, Eric Gauthier may well have delivered his programming masterpiece. For it is not only existing members of the Gauthier Dance family who are on board. With the ICON/ICONS line-up, the global network of the Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart has once again expanded significantly, indeed illustriously.
