La Veronal: Sonoma

(Spain)

Marcos Morau's pieces present surreal images of alien beauty, symbolic worlds of movement, art, architecture, text and music. His latest work is inspired by the processions of his native Spain and transposes them to a kind of film studio, where a fantastical microcosm of Buñuel and ecclesiastical rites, faceless figures and beatifications emerges. Debussy and Wagner quietly resonate, grotesque old women become innocent girls carrying in the moon, and the deep black of funeral processions transforms into the brilliant light of blank canvases. Women glide across the stage like clockwork dolls, an all-female collective finds its way out of tradition into modernity, freeing itself from the shackles of conformism with loud drumbeats and screams. The word “Sonoma” is not found in any dictionary; it is composed of the Greek word soma (body) and the Latin sonum (sound) – La Veronal presents sounding bodies vibrating with energy.

„Morau is one of the very few directors able to take us on a trip to a surreal universe full of theatricality, visionary originality, and fantastic frescoes that evoke cinematographic, literary, and pictorial climaxes.“ – www.artribune.com, Italien
