Josef Nadj: OMMA

(France)

German premiere

Eight men in suits stand in a row tentatively investigating the floor, their breathing and their voices. The soles of their feet quiver, their bodies swing in rhythm, virtually explode – on an empty stage they search within themselves for the origin of dance, the pure essence of movement. They come from Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast and the two Congolese states, and they bring with them a highly diverse range of styles and cultures ranging from hip-hop to African folklore to contemporary dance. “Omma” in ancient Greek not only means “eye,” but also refers to what is being looked at. Choreographer Josef Nadj, who, with his Hungarian-Serbian roots and French residency, is a European through and through, focuses on this foreign culture in order to gain insight into his inner self. “Omma” is a story of sharing and transmitting; again and again the individual merges into the overwhelming chorus of the community and yet each dancer preserves his own language and identity.

"Omma is a powerful work that asks fundamental questions. At the same time the dance does its work: the rhythm, harmony and beauty affect and transport us. Is this perhaps already our first answer? " — www.magcentre.fr

"It is very clear what Josef Nadj saw in his dancers: their talent." — Les Echos

"When the eight men meet in a row, when these eight bodies move together and in the same way, we rediscover ourselves in an emotional dance that enchants and seduces. " — www.magcentre.fr
