Four women sit at a long table with rural headdresses made of fruits and flowers adorning their heads. In the purest, four-part harmony they sing an old song about the cuckoo, their faces mischievously dancing to it. Their braided hair, however, is attached to big axes and sickles; like marionettes the four hang on ropes... In a series of astonishing associations, Flora Détraz presents grotesque metamorphoses of femininity, as playful as they are disturbing. Between the beautiful sound of the voices and the increasingly macabre images, a colossal uncertainty emerges, a constant tightrope dance between joy and horror, archaic symbolism and unleashed bodies. In her works, the young choreographer, who herself sits at the table, explores the relationship between voice and movement; here, joy is her subject: as existential expression, as resolute resilience, and as an infinite reservoir out of which the human being becomes creative. "Muyte Maker" is Flemish for mutineer, but also for a birdcage; the ambiguous title evokes both captivity and liberation.
