Emanuel Gat Dance: LOVETRAIN2020
Shout, shout, let it all out! With his choreographed hymn to the 1980s, Emanuel Gat transports us straight into pulsating life. Set to the classic hits of the new wave duo Tears for Fears, Gat’s piece burns with the attitude to life characterizing a colorful era in which young people were still permitted to believe in the future - a utopian time with an epic groove, when pop music became more intellectual and the sound synthetic. The Israeli choreographer, who is based in the south of France, has devised very free movements to these songs, letting his dancers drift with the rhythm or dither against it, sending them into relief-like poses through which a spirit evocative of old paintings repeatedly wafts. Designer Thomas Bradley, himself a dancer on the stage, has created fantastical costumes that combine baroque and hippy sensibilities with big-city glamour. We see people coming together and drifting apart, giving themselves to one another and yet searching further, finding freedom and energy by Sowing the Seeds of Love.
"Loud, joyous, physical, close. […] A celebration of the body, of performance, of life." — The New York Times
"Emanuel Gat’s show is a deep breath of fresh air. LOVETRAIN2020 is a subtle blend that combines a touch of baroque in the costumes with influences from Egypt and India. Set to pop music from the 1980s, Emanuel Gat achieves a stunning choreographic mix." — France Inter
"LOVETRAIN2020 is Gat at his best, a really grandiose and hypnotic show, a piece at the crossroads of the arts to be indulged without moderation." — L’oeil d’Olivier
