Dada Masilo / Dance Factory: The Sacrifice

(South Africa)

She became famous with radical new interpretations of Swan Lake and Carmen – now the South African has drawn inspiration from Le Sacre du Printemps, one of the most scandalous ballets in theater history. “What do we sacrifice in our daily lives?” asks Dada Masilo. Her idiosyncratic response covers a spectrum from evocative, life-affirming rites to the willing self-sacrifice of an individual portrayed in a gentle and deeply sad farewell. This piece is also about black identity, violence against women and justice, and the choreographer and her dancers find powerful, authentic movements in the traditional Tswana dance of Botswana. The music is played live, oscillating between African percussion, folk rhythms and a lonely lament. Here, too, Dada Masilo opens up completely new thematic aspects for us with her perspective from the other side of the equator.

"Following her sensational contemporary adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and her no less brilliant realization of Adam’s Giselle, Masilo presents with The Sacrifice another milestone of contemporary dance."  — Kurier, Vienna

"A rarely seen degree of zest for life, aggression and anger, melancholy and pain, sadness and despair, and authenticity radiate from the stage."  — tanz.at

"Her modern interpretations have shocked and captivated her audiences nearly as much as her distinctive, astonishingly quick and often jarring fusion of African dance and classical ballet moves." — CNN
