La Macana: pink unicorns

(Spain)

His son’s cell phone screen displays unicorns in pink. When he was a teenager himself, dancer Alexis Fernández kept as far away as possible from anything pink – how is he supposed to understand the youth of today, Generation Z and post-millenials born in the midst of the technology boom and supposedly socially dysfunctional due to their dependence on digital devices? To find out, the Cuban gets his son on stage, who is in no way inferior to his father in terms of coolness, charm and Cuban joie de vivre and dances a piece with him about the turbulent time during which parents suddenly become embarrassing and sons taller than their fathers. Set against brightly colored bouncy castle elements, this playful, emotional dance theater shows how the brashness of youth collides with the experience of parents. We see the rebellion of young people against everything conservative but also children's primal trust in their parents. With each generation, the same struggle for understanding arises between father, mother, daughter and son. Fernández and his co-choreographer Caterina Varela have brought in Samir Akika, dance director at Theater Bremen and a specialist in street dance with young people. The result is a competition between generations, spontaneous, conflictual and true to life.
