Russell Maliphant Company: Conceal | Reveal – ‘Special Programme’

„Piece No. 43“, „Shift“, „Two x Two“

(London/Great Britain)

The tension flowing through muscles is clearly visible in Russell Maliphant’s hypnotic dance pieces. In his sculptural works the British choreographer, aided by lighting magician Michael Hulls, carves the shimmering beauty of the human body out of the darkness. The movements exude a physical plasticity while at the same time flowing with a meditative softness inspired by yoga. Together with Hulls, Maliphant creates extraordinary plays of movement and light. In the solo “Shift”, for example, he multiplies himself using shadows to create a quartet. At times the lighting makes the dancers seem almost to float above the ground or holds them imprisoned in its beam; mysteriously they splinter the silhouettes of a solitary figure and enter into contact with it.

„The dance world would be very much the poorer without Russell Maliphant’s scintillating studies in movement and light” – The Telegraph
“Conceal | Reveal is an evening of dazzling physical poetry that leaves you at once rejoicing in Maliphant and Hull’s long partnership and craving the next 20 years, too”
– The Telegraph
