Jo Strømgren Kompani: A Dance Tribute to the Art of Football

(Oslo/Norway)

Finally, ballet for real men! With a Nordic sense of the grotesque, Jo Strømgren brings the beautiful game to the stage and shows us the aesthetics of football madness. Amidst ardent supporters, flabbergasted players and balls that go wherever they want, the choreographer confronts the refined art form of ballet with the full-blooded snarl of the hooligan in a work in which his team of dancers is accompanied by both booming rock and emotionally charged operatic arias. Strømgren shows us that, in spite of all the differences between high culture and mass phenomena, the rituals of the stage and those of the playing field are not so very different, and we are given an insight into why the entire world is obsessed with this sport. Also recommended for younger ball(et) aficionados!

„It’s a cheeky, rumbustious celebration of the physical exuberance of football and dance.“ – The Times
